Topsham police are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a female passenger involved in the three-vehicle incident.

The crash was reported on Wednesday at 3:41 p.m. on Route 196 in the area of West Merrill Road.

Topsham police said in a press statement that according to the preliminary investigation a 2002 GMC Envoy driven by Justin R. Cyr, 32, of Lewiston, was headed westbound on Route 196 when it crossed the center line and sideswiped an eastbound flatbed tractor- trailer unit owned by Ray Labbe and Sons of Brunswick. The truck was driven by Dana L. Moore, 55, of Freeport.

Police said Cyr’s vehicle continued into the eastbound lane of Route 196, striking head-on a 2007 Honda Civic operated by Barbara E. Brusila, 61, of Warren.

Cyr was transported to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick with non-life threatening injuries. Barbara Brusila was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, also for injuries that aren’t life threatening.

Route 196 was closed for about five hours, with traffic from in-town Topsham detoured down Meadow Cross Road into Bowdoin.

The collision is being investigated by Topsham Police Department, with assistance by the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit and is being reconstructed by Detective Sgt. Andrew Booth of the Bath Police Department and Cmdr. Thomas Garrepy of the Brunswick Police Department.
