BRUNSWICK

American Legion George T. Files Post 20 of Brunswick will hold its annual public ceremony Thursday to mark the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, starting at 11:30 a.m. at the gazebo on the Brunswick Mall.

The observance will pay tribute to first responders and those in the armed forces, according to the legion.

Maj. Gary Wright of the Maine State Police field operations will be the keynote speaker. Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner John Morris will read a letter from Gov. Paul LePage.

Blue Star Service banners will be presented to family members with loved ones in the armed forces. The banner program was created in 1917 to honor families of military members during World War I. The banners were hung in windows to indicate that a family member was serving in the military. The American Legion rekindled that program after the 9/11 attacks.

Post 20 will also present some local veterans with honorable service certificates from the state, part of the Maine Bureau of Veterans Service’s ongoing Honor a Veteran program to recognize every Maine veteran who has served in the military. Nor’easters Barbershop Chorus will be perform patriotic music.
