AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine’s Lobster Advisory Council has unanimously voted to move forward with a $3 million business and marketing plan intended to boost demand and prices that have fallen to their lowest level in decades.
The details of the plan approved Thursday and the way it gets funded — possibly through higher lobster license fees — must be approved by the state Legislature. The council’s current marketing budget is about $400,000.
The Kennebec Journal reports that the 11-member council voted in favor of the plan at a three-hour meeting attended by about 50 members of the lobster industry.
Some lobstermen balked at the suggestion of higher fees, but others embraced the idea.
