STANDISH (AP) — The Cumberland County sheriff’s office says a pickup truck that crashed into a number of utility poles, trapping the driver and starting a fire, prompted Central Maine Power to cut electricity to the area.
About 1,000 people were without power for a time following the crash, which was reported about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Officials say the driver, 24-year-old Nicholas Cawood, of Standish, was able to get out of the vehicle with help from neighbors.
Cawood suffered minor injuries, but a 13-week-old puppy died in the crash.
Officials say speed and alcohol were factors. Cawood was charged with operating under the influence. He’s due in court in January.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
