Care of the Soul
Lent is a good time to be looking after the well-being of our souls, that place within us which is the center of our spiritual lives. The soul is a place of great depth and value, and it is the very essence of our life in God. It is soul that gives richness and deep satisfaction to life. We all know soul when we encounter it. Certain music has soul, and we refer to some persons as “good souls”. When moral problems arise we resort to “soul searching”. But how do we nourish and care for our souls? We try to keep physically fit. We feed our minds and our intellects, and try to keep our spirits up. But the soul needs care too, and a good place to start is with the Psalms. The Psalms are a window into the soul, offering many insights for how to care for it. Psalms 42 and 63 remind us of our deep hunger for the presence of God in our lives. So if we can build a little chapel within our hearts where we can go to pour out our souls to God, we will be doing the work of Lent.
