FREEPORT — Julianna (Cummings) Caverly, 75, long time resident of Bath, passed away early Monday morning August 27, 2012 at Hawthorne House Nursing Home.

The daughter of Charles F. and E. Beatrice (Nichols) Cummings, Julie was born in Bath on November 3, 1936 and was the second of three sisters. She lived in Bath most of her life and enjoyed summers in Five Islands. A 1955 graduate of Morse High School, she was also Morse’s 1954 Mohiba Queen. She then attended Tufts University’s Jackson School where she played varsity basketball. Later she attained her teaching degree from the University of Southern Maine.

On April 2, 1960 she married Dr. Herbert T. Caverly II and together they enjoyed 44 years of marriage before Bud passed away in 2004. They raised three children and hosted numerous others over the years including her niece Kim Clark. Julie was always a caring and loving mother with a witty sense of humor, valued the many friendships she developed over the years and enjoyed entertaining. People knew they were always welcome at her home. In addition to raising her own children, she was a popular elementary school teacher at the Fisher-Mitchell School in Bath where she taught Kindergarten and First Grade. She also was an instructor at the Bailey Evening School where she assisted many students attain their GED. Later in life she worked in her husband’s dental practice as office manager, always offering a reassuring smile.

Julie was active in the community and a member of the Bath Junior League and Lioness Club where she worked on many fundraisers over the years. In addition to helping others, her joys included the Maine coast (particularly her beloved Five Islands), boating on the Kennebec, fishing at Bear Spring Camps, playing cards, writing poetry and short stories, going to Fat Boy Drive-In, driving around Bath with her friend Judy Podziak and adopting just about any animal that showed up on her doorstep.

She is predeceased by her husband Bud; her older sister Sally Sawyer; her sister-in-law Lardina Garland; and her brothers-in-law Peter Garland and David Newcomb.

Surviving her are two sons; Herbert T. Caverly III and daughter-in-law Siobhan of Lake Oswego, OR and John Scott Caverly and daughter-inlaw Renee of South Berwick, ME; her daughter Lorena Coffin and son-in-law Todd Coffin of Freeport, ME; and her four grandsons Alex, Matthew, Max and Connor. Other survivors include her younger sister Carol Newcomb, her brother-in-law Carlton Sawyer and several nieces and nephews and their children.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, August 30, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Daigle Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 31, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Grace Episcopal Church, 1100 Washington Street in Bath, followed by a reception at the same location. Burial will follow at 2 PM at Oak Grove Cemetery in Bath. The entrance is between the ponds off Oak Grove Ave. Memorial contributions may be made to the Morse High Scholarship Fund, P.O.
