A protracted fight among the town, state and Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority over whether to extend tax breaks for Kestrel Aircraft is not helpful.

We’ve already seen where lack of coordination leads: Last year, Kestrel pulled plans to make planes here, partly because another state was better organized.

Should Kestrel get another tax break? We tend to take a dim view of most corporate handouts (and note that the kestrel, in nature, is a rather predatory bird).

But the real issue is this: The state, town and MRRA must finally figure out how to talk to each other in charting a flight plan for Brunswick Landing — and soon.

In particular, the state and MRRA should dedicate itself to recruiting board members from Brunswick and Topsham with experience in development and job creation. Those without that experience should be replaced.

Only then can we be sure that local economic concerns are paramount. Right now, we’re not.
