WISCASSET

Residents once again will decide if the town should accept land that includes a dam on Montsweag Brook.

According to the article on the Nov. 6 ballot, Central Maine Power Co. would deed the real estate and grant $100,000 to the town for stewardship and monitoring.

Voters agreed to the transaction on June 12, but at least two selectmen — Chairwoman Pam Dunning and Ed Polewarczyk — say doing so would represent a financial burden to the town, and that issues have since arisen.

Selectwoman Judy Colby counters that voters knew what they were doing when they voted in the first place.

Last May, a state official inspected the dam and said the concrete was in good condition. But a buildup of trees and brush had compacted on the embankment on both sides of the dam. The flotsam would need to be removed and gravel brought in to build up the embankment, the state said.

In order to do that, the town would have to work with adjoining landowners.

Moreover, estimates of the cost to construct a road to allow for equipment to reach the dam on the Woolwich side are nearly $60,000.

Also on the town’s Nov. 6 town warrant:

— Article 2. Shall an ordinance titled “Subdivision Review” be enacted? Due to the length of this ordinance, the full text is available in the town clerk’s office.

— Article 3. Shall an ordinance titled “Site Plan Review” be enacted?

Polls at the Wiscasset Community Center will be open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
