PORTLAND (AP) — Witnesses in the trial of a Portland handyman have described a pattern of exorbitant charges and shoddy work.
The Maine Attorney General’s Office of Consumer Protection has sued Daniel Tucci.
According to a civil complaint, the state identified nearly $236,000 in losses among 13 customers, ranging from $175 to a botched basement project that cost a Cape Elizabeth couple almost $140,000.
The Portland Press Herald reports that some of Tucci’s clients, many of them elderly, testified Wednesday he would sometimes write more than a dozen estimates for a single job, and ask for more and more money. Most described his work as poor.
Others said they were pleased with his work.
Tucci’s attorney has said his client did nothing wrong. Tucci is expected to present his case today.
