Men’s tennis
Casey Grindon won the top singles bracket to lead a Bowdoin College sweep of singles flights at the Wallach Men’s Tennis Invitational hosted by Bates last weekend.
The tournament was the final fall appearance for the Polar Bears, who will begin dual match play when the spring season begins in March.
Grindon led an outstanding effort that included a win by Kyle Wolstencroft in B-flight singles and a victory by Chase Savage in C-flight singles. Luke Trinka and Savage combined to finish as a runner up in B-flight doubles.
Grindon was dominant, losing just one set in four matches en route to the title. Seeded fourth in the bracket, he rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Jugal Marfatia of Trinity in the semifinals, 2-6, 6-3, 11-9, and then easily handled Carlos de Bracamonte of Amherst, 6-2, 6-3 in the title match.
Wolstencroft survived a pair of early three-set scares in the opening rounds before bouncing Alan Jackson of Middlebury 7-5, 6-1 in the semifinals and dominating Aaron Seigel of Trinity 6-1, 6- 0 in the final.
Savage took a similar route, using a pair of three-set wins to advance to the semifinals where he dispatched Tufts’ Austin Blau 6-4, 6-3 and defeated Eli Mlaver in the final, 7-5, 6-0.
He also teamed with Luke Trinka to win three matches and advance to the semifinals of the B-flight doubles bracket.
