PORTLAND — While sports fans will be rooting for the Baltimore Ravens or San Francisco 49ers this weekend, Catholic youth throughout Maine will be celebrating their own Souper Bowl of Caring.

Locally, youth will be collecting funds for Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program during weekend Masses at St. John the Baptist Church.

The annual Souper Bowl of Caring mobilizes young people to fight hunger and poverty, focusing specifically during the National Football League’s championship weekend. A hundred percent of the monetary and food donations collected are given to local charities.

A number of church groups throughout Maine will participate.

Since the inception of Souper Bowl of Caring in 1990, more than $50 million in monetary and food donations have been made nationwide.
