The City Council on Wednesday night will consider a conservation easement for Butler Head Preserve, 133 acres of protected land jutting into Merrymeeting Bay.

If approved, the easement will go to Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT), which is committed to conserving land and wildlife habitat of the lower Kennebec and Sheepscot River estuaries. Federal and state fisheries and wildlife services have designated Butler Head as “highly significant” for marine and wildlife habitats.

“Some of us went out there Friday and walked around,” said City Council Chairman Bernard Wyman. “It’s quite a place.”

The Forestry Committee monitors and maintains the preserve, Wyman said. An easement to KELT would preserve the land as a resource for future generations, he said.

“It’s just to preserve the land for the people of the city of Bath,” Wyman said. “No building would be allowed.”

Wyman added that there might be public comments. One landowner has talked about purchasing a parcel to enlarge his lot, he said.

“Nobody wants it until somebody mentions it,” he said. “Nobody wants to pay the market price.”

Also on Wednesday night’s agenda, the council will make a presentation to former Ward 3 Councilor Kyle Rogers, for his years of service to the city.

The meeting at City Hall begins at 6.
