To the Editor:

According to Local Governments for Sustainability, “In 2008, humans used about 40 percent more resources than the planet could regenerate that year, and we are currently using the equivalent of 1.5 planets to maintain our modern lifestyle.”

The report continues, “If we continue utilizing natural resources and producing waste at current rates, by the early 2030s we will require the resources of two planets to meet our needs. This overshoot is at the root of the most pressing environmental problems we face today: climate change, declining biodiversity, shrinking forests and the collspse of world fisheries. It is in humanity’s best interest to use sustainable practices to mitigate these changes as quickly as possible.”

So if the above statement is true, how is capitalism, which is based on growth and maximizing profits, going to save us from complete environmental collapse? If that was to happen, how long could we, as a species, survive?

I don’t believe that we can save ourselves without political, economic and social change. We need to change how we think and how we act. Neither the Twiddle Dums nor Twiddle Dees (Democrats or Republicans) has any kind of a plan to do that. All they offer is more of the same psuedoscience economic bull that has brought us to the brink.
