BATH

Sagadahoc Preservation Inc. will present a lecture on “Bath’s Churches and Public Buildings” on Wednesday, Nov. 14.

Earle G. Shettleworth, Maine State Historian and director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, will be the featured speaker.

The program will be held at 7 p.m. in the Winter Street Center, 880 Washington St. Admission is free.

Bath is well known for its downtown of distinctive 19thcentury commercial buildings, as well as for its Washington Street neighborhood of shipbuilders’ and sea captains’ homes.

The city has an equally rich architectural heritage in its churches and public buildings, from the Winter Street Church of 1843 to the City Hall of 1929.

Using historic images and current views, Shettleworth’s presentation will explore Bath’s 19th- and 20th-century houses of worship, schools, fire stations and customs houses — those both lost and preserved.

Shettleworth has been the director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission since 1976, and was appointed State Historian in 2004.

He has lectured and written extensively on Maine history and architecture.
