DURHAM
Firefighters from six towns responded to a blaze on Route 9 early this morning where ashes and wreckage are now all that remain of a large, old barn.
The call came in at 1 a.m. from a neighbor who spotted the glow at the property, known locally as the Babcock Farm, about a quarter-mile west of the intersection of Swamp, Plummer Mill and Newell Brook roads.
“It was purely a defensive (call),” said Durham Fire Chief William St. Michel. “When we got there, the barn was fully involved. There was one wall left standing. We managed to save the house, but the barn was already gone.”
Investigators from the state Fire Marshal’s Office are scheduled to be at the fire site today.
Tanker trucks from Lisbon, Freeport, Bowdoin, Bowdoinham and Topsham were on scene during the response.
