
The seventh-ranked Polar Bears used a 4-1 run midway through the second half to pull ahead for good and improved to 9-2 (5-2 NESCAC). The fourth-ranked Mules lost their second straight game and fell to 9-3 (4-3 NESCAC). The last five meetings between the squads have been decided by a single goal dating back to 2011, with Bowdoin holding a 3-2 advantage over that stretch.
Megan O’Connor scored three goals, including a pair in the second half, to lead Bowdoin. Taylor Wilson had a goal and two assists, while Annie Glenn had a goal, three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Colby was paced by two goals and two assists from Lexie Perticone, while Sara Miller pitched in a pair of scores for the visitors. Abby Hatch led all players with six draw controls in the loss.
Colby jumped to a 4-1 lead thanks to a pair of early goals from Miller, but Bowdoin was able to trim the lead to 4-3 by halftime thanks to markers late in the period from Glenn and O’Connor.
The Polar Bears drew even on another O’Connor goal five minutes into the second frame, but Perticone regained the lead for the Mules just 50 ticks later. Bowdoin took its first lead of the game, 6-5, after consecutive scores from O’Connor and Lindsay Picard, but again Perticone answered for the visitors, making it 6-6 with 19:42 on the clock.
Bowdoin scored the next two goals to take the lead for good. Wilson converted a free position shot with 14:47 on the clock and Emma Beecher made it a two-goal cushion with 9:35 to go.
Colby was able to get one back from Kendall Smith at 4:49, but Bowdoin’s defense held from there to clinch the victory.
Isabel Sippel made six saves in the win for Bowdoin, while Claire Dickson stopped seven for Colby. Bowdoin held a slim 20-19 advantage in shots, but controlled the battle for loose balls with an 18-10 margin in groundballs for the contest. Bowdoin also converted on 3- of-7 free-position shots compared to 0-for-4 for Colby.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Saturday when they travel to play at Connecticut College (noon).
Men’s lacrosse
Junior Peter Reuter finished with four goals as Bowdoin scored eight times in the second quarter on its way to defeating Babson College,
16-11, on Tuesday night.
The Polar Bears, who snapped its six-game losing streak, are now 2-9 overall, while Babson fell to 5-6.
Senior David Nemirov added three goals and two assists, while sophomore Brandon Lee scored once and dished out a game-high five assists to lead the Polar Bears. Sophomore Alex Osgood and firstyear Matthew Crowell both contributed two goals. Senior Robert Talcott won 17-of-29 faceoffs and led all players with 10 groundballs.
Matthew Logan finished with two goals and two assists to lead the Beavers.
Babson took a 2-1 lead with 10:40 to go in the opening quarter on a tally by Logan, but Nemirov tied the game 56 seconds later, and Osgood put Bowdoin back in front 3-2 with a tally at the 7:20 mark. Harrison scored off a feed from Brown to make it 3-3 with six minutes to play in the stanza, and Logan notched his second marker of the game, converting a feed from Coan with 42 seconds left in the period to give the Beavers a 4-3 edge.
The teams traded goals to open the second quarter before the Polar Bears ripped off a 7-1 run to close the half. Nemirov scored twice and Lee contributed three assists during a five-goal spurt over the span of 3:59 that put Bowdoin in front, 9- 5.
Peter Mumford posted 10 saves for Bowdoin. John Young played the final 2:31 for the Polar Bears, stopping one shot. The Polar Bears finished with a 46-30 advantage in shots and 45-29 edge in groundballs.
Bowdoin will return to action on Saturday at home against Connecticut College at 1 p.m.
Softball sweep
Bowdoin secured a pair of NESCAC wins on Tuesday afternoon against Bates with 4-1 and 5-2 finishes behind complete-game performances by Julia Geaumont and Emily Griffin in the circle.
The Bobcats (1-12, 0-7 NESCAC) collected 15 hits to Bowdoin’s (14-5, 3-0 NESCAC) 12 in the two games, but lacked the clutch hit, leaving 17 players on base in both games.
Geaumont picked up the gameone win for Bowdoin, striking out six while scattering seven hits over seven innings and allowing one earned run. Geaumont helped her own cause in the bottom of the first, hitting a two-out home run over the left-field fence to give Bowdoin the early 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats threatened in the second, with Kira Shaikh beating out a bunt to the pitcher to start things off. Paige Ahlholm hit a oneout single to right, putting runners on first and second with one out. But, Geaumont retired the next two batters to end the threat.
Bowdoin added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a pair of runs on an RBI double from Adriane Krul that scored Claire McCarthy and Lauren O’Shea.
The Bobcats got on the board in the sixth off the bat of Kelsey Freedman, who doubled to left.
In the nightcap, Griffin threw all seven innings for Bowdoin, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out nine.
The Polar Bears took the early lead when Adriane Krul doubled to center, stole third and came home when Griffin grounded out to second.
The Bobcats threatened to even the score in the top of the third as Maddie Inlow and Jenney Abbott started the frame with back to back singles. Griffin retired the next two batters before ending the inning with a strikeout.
Freedman held Bowdoin scoreless in the second and third, but Marisa O’Toole added to the Polar Bears lead when she knocked a two-run homer to right-center field to give Bowdoin the 3- 0 advantage after four innings. Bowdoin added a pair of runs in the bottom of five on a pinch-hit RBI double from Alana Luzzio and an RBI single from Geaumont.
The Polar Bears will return to action today as they face the University of Southern Maine in a doubleheader at St. Joseph’s College in Standish beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Additionally, due to unplayable conditions at Pickard Field, this weekend’s NESCAC East Division Series against Tufts has been moved to Medford, Mass. The teams will play a single game at 4 p.m. Friday and a twinbill on Saturday beginning at noon.
Baseball game moved
Thursday’s scheduled home baseball game for Bowdoin against St. Joseph’s College has been moved to Standish on Thursday.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.
