OWLS HEAD (AP) — The driver whose pickup collided with a small airplane on a runway, killing three men in Maine, says he announced over an advisory frequency for aircraft that he planned to cross the runway.

Stephen Turner told the Knox County Sheriff ’s Department there was no response so he proceeded, colliding with the plane on Nov. 16. The plane had stopped briefly at Knox County Regional Airport so two passengers could swap seats.

The Bangor Daily News says pieces of the Cessna 172 elevator and rear stabilizer were found on the runway, along with grill and headlight pieces from Turner’s truck.
