Saints

Once a little boy asked another, “What is a saint?” Thinking of stained glass windows, the boy answered, “A saint is someone that the light shines through.” History is replete with saints and martyrs who have unselfishly dedicated their lives to grow the Kingdom of God here on earth. Christians have, since ancient times, honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ, and who have borne witness to their faith, some at the cost of their lives. A saint is someone through whose life we learn what God is like. The church defines them as the person who keeps on trying when everyone else has given up. They wield a powerful influence by touching the lives of others in ways that transform them for the better. They are the souls who fill us with light, who strengthen us and leave us better than they found us. Those are the saints, and they are all around us. A line from a favorite hymn goes, “You can meet them in school, or in lanes, or at sea, in church or in trains, or in shops, or at tea, for the saints of God are just folks like me, and I mean to be one too.”
