WOOLWICH
A 59-year-old Woolwich man was killed Wednesday night after the car he was driving struck a tree.
Police said Wednesday they believe speed and alcohol are contributing factors in the crash.
The Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s Department is continuing to investigate the crash that killed Duane K. York, 59, of Woolwich.
The sheriff ’s department responded at 5:17 p.m. to a report of a vehicle off the road in the area of 76 Gray Corner Road, according to a press released issued by Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry. Nearby deputies heard the sound of the crash and were the first to arrive. They reported the lone occupant of the vehicle was deceased.
York was driving a 2001 Nissan four-door sedan, according to Merry.
“The vehicle was traveling east on Gray Corner Road, lost control, ran off the road and struck a large pine tree,” he said. “The driver was not wearing a seat belt. Speed and alcohol are considered as contributing factors.”
Merry said, “The operator was within a couple of miles from his residence. The ongoing investigation will trace his whereabouts prior to the accident.”
The crash remains under investigation, led by Sgt. Greg Siegel. He was assisted at the scene by Deputy Al Huntington. Cpl. Andrew Booth of the Bath Police Department was called to help reconstruct the crash.
