My daughter and her husband hosted an open house to introduce us to their friends and neighbors.

Enjoying the patio for food and drink on Dec. 23 was a new experience for us New Englanders. But let me back up just about eight hours, as I watched my son-in-law prepare his giant smoker grill.

He lights the burner and you can hear the roar of the gas as he cranks up the flame. Then he adds two large pieces of wood on top of the burner and waits till they catch fire. Meanwhile he adds more kindling into the firebox. When the two pieces of wood have burst into flame, he carries them over to the firebox and throws them in.

When the fire wasn’t doing well, he went into his garage and came back out with a leaf blower. I had to hand it to him that it was a first for me.

The best part of the day was when the spare ribs, two pork loins and a huge ham came out of the smoker. We ate well that evening, and met with the some of the friendliest people. Ruth and I had a wonderful time.
