PHIPPSBURG — Lloyd Arnold Hill, 86, of Phippsburg and Calais, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta, Maine. He was born on Feb. 16, 1929 in Calais, Maine.
Lloyd married Edith V. Hawkes on Jan. 16, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, a daughter, Maria Tickle and her husband Andrew of Calais, Maine, a stepson, Ralph E. Burden of Halifax, Nova Scotia, two stepdaughters, Sharon Boucher and her husband Glen of Carrabassas, CA, and Bonnie Trader of Avondale, AZ; his grandchildren Michael and Katy Tickle of Calais, stepgrandchildren Joshua Burden of West Bath, Ben Burden of Phippsburg, and Taylor Boucher of CA. He will also be missed by his stepgreat-grandchildren Emma, Kadance, Garret, and Addison, and two nephews Buddy Smith of Iowa, and Terry Smith of Alaska.
Lloyd is predeceased by his first wife of, 40 years, Phyllis, a sister Avis Smith, and a nephew Larry Smith.
After graduating from Calais High School with the class of 1946, Lloyd joined the U.S. Navy and served for two years in Quantico and Washington, D.C. as an air traffic controller. Following his Navy service, Lloyd returned to Calais where he worked for Dead River Oil Company for several years before joining the U.S. Postal Service, in Calais, where he worked his way from teller up to postmaster before his retirement in 1989. In his retirement years, he worked in the maintenance department at Sebasco Harbor Resort in Phippsburg.
Lloyd’s interests included flying, golfing, camping, hunting, fishing, motorcycling and collecting hats.
His involvements included membership in the Masons, Shriners, and the American Legion. He sang with a barber shop quartet for many years as a true bass! He was a devoted and faithful member of the Small Point Baptist Church in Phippsburg, starting when he met Edie in 1997. He was a dedicated volunteer worker during the yearlong construction of a major addition to the church building, sang in the choir, and worked in the kitchen for many fellowship functions including working with his dear friend Truman for monthly Men’s Breakfasts.
Lloyd’s family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff of the Maine Veterans Home for the wonderful care given to him during his long bout with Alzheimer’s, and the support given his family as well.
A celebration of life will be held at the Small Point Baptist Church on Aug. 1, 2015, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception there. His interment will take place later in Calais.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in his memory, to the Shriners Hospital of Boston, MA or the Small Point Baptist Church, 1754 Main Road, Phippsburg, ME 04562.
