Town Manager Peter Joseph and Finance Director Jessica Maloy are scheduled to present the operating and 2018-19 tax increment financing budget to councilors tonight.

The town is proposing $10 million in spending, a $295,393 or 2.9 percent increase that would increase taxes by $32,643.

The current property tax rate is $14.95 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The town is proposing an increase of $0.02 per $1,000 of assessed valuation — an additional $4 per year in taxes for a home valued at $200,000.

According to budget documents, the proposed municipal, county and Regional School Unit 5 spending plans combined would increase taxes by $863,580 and increase the tax rate by $0.54 per $1,000 of assessed value. That would mean a total tax bill of $3,098, an increase of $108 or 3.6 percent.

The council will also consider setting a public hearing for May 15 to determine whether the town’s ordinance requires Doherty’s North Freeport General Store on Wardtown Road to obtain a victualer license.

Councilors will also consider disbursing perpetual care funds to several cemeteries Tuesday, and write off more than $12,000 in personal property taxes owed on properties by defunct businesses with no assets.
