A Lewiston man who allegedly pulled his ex-girlfriend’s hair and caused several thousands of dollars of damage to her car last week was arrested by the Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s Department and charged with domestic violence and criminal mischief.

Sgt. Dale Hamilton said the 21-year-old female victim was returning to her River Road home from a fireworks show at around 1:20 a.m. on Friday, July 5. A gathering was there, including ex-boyfriend Samuel J. Phelan, 21, of Lewiston.

Hamilton said the two, who had been broken up several months, argued, “and then he shoved her and pulled her hair, and that’s when she went into the house.”

People inside the house allegedly told Phelan to leave at that point, but instead, “he was looking in the windows for her, and that’s when he ripped out a screen and smashed it, and then went to the car and kicked it,” Hamilton said.

He allegedly kicked the driver’s side of the victim’s 2009 Nissan Versa several times from the front quarter panel to the rear quarter panel, leaving dents. The damage to the car was estimated at $5,100, Hamilton said.

Phelan was arrested without incident July 6 at his home on Martha Avenue in Lewiston by Hamilton and officers from Lewiston Police Department, and transported to Two Bridges Regional Jail. He was charged with domestic violence assault; aggravated criminal mischief, a felony, stemming from the damage to the car; and criminal mischief.

Hamilton said Phelan was released from jail after posting $500 cash bail. Bail conditions prohibit contact with the victim and any witnesses, and from use of alcohol.
