THE BRUNSWICK JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL seventh- and eighth-grade math teams finished a strong season of competition in two leagues: The Southern Maine Math League, a written competition; and the Central Maine Math League, oral and written. Over the course of the year, the seventh-grade team, in photo at left, was represented by Josie Adolf, Adam Benoit, Forest Blankenship, Tobyn Blatt, Sophie Blair, Lily Gaffney, Claire Johnson, Paige McKinnon, Matthew Metcalf, Anna Rider, Andrew Samson, Kyra Teboe, Jeremy Vuong and Elina Woolever. Eighth-grade team members, in photo at right, included Allie Burns, Rongxi Chen, Emily Cowan, Logan Engstrom, Hannah Escoe, Olu Vaughan, Anna Webster, Julia Webster, Taylor Worthington and Stephanie Zhang. In the Southern Maine Math League, the seventh-grade team finished fourth out of 22 schools, sixth of 25 schools and 11th of 25 schools in three meets. Stephanie Zhang was an outstanding individual competitor for the eighth grade team, earning a first, second and third individual high score at three of the meets. Anna Webster also had an individual first place high score at the second meet of the year. The eighth-graders had a consistently strong finish in league competition, finishing fourth out of 20 schools in the third meet of the year and earning a fifth place finish for the other three meets. In the Central Maine Math League, the seventh-grade team earned first place trophies in two of the meets and a second place trophy in the other meet. The eighth-graders finished third in two of the meets. A team of Stephanie Zhang, Anna Webster, Tobyn Blatt and Daniel Lyons went to the regional Math Counts competition in early March: Tobyn Blatt placed sixth individually in the regional competition out of a field of 60 students. The team finished in third place, earning a spot at the state final competition. At the state Math Counts finals, the BJHS team had a seventh-place finish. Stephanie Zhang placed second at the state finals out 80 competitors.
