BRUNSWICK
A New York man was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland Thursday morning after his car collided with a pickup truck on Route 1.
The crash was reported at 9:16 a.m. just east of the Route 196 on-ramp.
Brunswick Police Cmdr. Tom Garrepy said Theodorus Verheyen, 83, of Tarrytown, N.Y., was driving a 2003 Toyota Corolla north on Route 1 and pulled over onto the right shoulder of the road. He then immediately tried to cross both lanes of traffic to try to use the crossover road between northbound and southbound lanes designated for authorized personnel only.
James Huff, 39, of Freeport was also traveling north in his 1998 Dodge Ram pickup and couldn’t avoid striking the Toyota.
Huff was not injured, but Brunswick Rescue personnel took Verheyen to Maine Medical Center. Garrepy said the man was conscious and talking when the ambulance left the scene. No condition was available by press time.
A third vehicle sustained damage when it struck debris from the crash and was leaking fluid.
Route 1 was reduced to one lane for approximately an hour. Garrepy said no charges are anticipated at this time.
