BRUNSWICK — Rumford native and University of Maine at Farmington alum, Rachael Labrecque, recently launched her educational technology company called Teachley.
Labrecque started Teachley with two colleagues, Kara Carpenter and Dana Pagar, while working toward their Ph.D.s in cognitive psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University.
All former teachers, they decided to form Teachley to help shape the future of teaching and learning.
“What distinguishes Teachley from other ed tech companies is our use of cognitive science research to create educational apps,” said Labrecque. “Our apps teach effective learning strategies and assess what kids know within engaging games. We also provide meaningful insight to teachers to help shape classroom instruction.”
Teachley has been awarded two Phase I and II Small Business Innovation Research grants from the Federal Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences to develop a suite of math apps.
Available now, their first iPad app “Teachley: Addimal Adventure,” draws upon comprehensive cognitive science research to teach single-digit addition to kindergarten through second-grade students.
Teachley’s first app teaches four important addition strategies through playful characters and narrative. Children can practice addition using a powerful visual model of each strategy during the “tool round.”
The “speed round” encourages memorization but also provides hints as needed.
“Teachley: Addimal Adventure” is available for iPads in Apple’s App Store for $3.99 in the U.S. and priced accordingly worldwide.
