A home was destroyed by fire Sunday morning on Lewis Hill Road in Bowdoin.

Firefighters were called to 22 Lewis Hill Road at 6:04 a.m. for a trailer home on fire. Dominic Martin, who lives at the residence, was not home at the time, though firefighters initially thought he may have been, based on the information they had.

“When we got here, fire was blowing out the central part of the trailer and it was coming out both bedrooms too,” said Bowdoin Fire Chief Tom Garrepy.

It was a defensive attack from the get-go due to the intensity of the fire, he said, making it unsafe to enter the home.

There were two dogs in the trailer that died in the fire.

Garrepy estimated it took about 45 minutes to get the flames under control.

As of 9 a.m. Sunday the cause of fire was undetermined, but the state fire marshal’s office continues to investigate. The fire marshal’s office responded with a command truck because of the initial concern that there may have been a fatality.

Garrepy said the American Red Cross was notified to assist Martin, who lost everything in the fire. A garage and shed on the property were saved.

Bowdoin, Bowdoinham and Richmond fire departments responded along with Lisbon EMS. Central Maine Power was also called to disconnect power.
