CUMBERLAND — The fog began to roll in, the clock was winding down, and Kelly Burrell was looking for the perfect scoring chance.

Burrell, a striker on the Greely girls’ soccer team, knew there was only one way to end it.

Put the ball in the net.

Burrell scored the lone goal Tuesday night as third-seeded Greely beat sixth-ranked Gorham 1-0 in a Western Class A quarterfinal.

Greely (10-3-2) will face second-seeded Thornton Academy (12-3) in the semifinals at Saco.

Gorham goalie Sarah Perkins (one save) came out to play the ball, but Sammi Toorish delivered a long forward pass to Burrell, who beat a defender and pushed the ball into an open net with the outside of her foot.

“I just hustled hard,” Burrell said. “I just hit it with the outside of my left foot and I hoped that it would go in the far corner.”

Burrell’s goal came with 8:47 left in sudden-death overtime.

“We knew keeping Sammi Toorish and Kelly Burrell’s feet off the ball and keeping them contained on offense was the biggest thing,” Gorham Coach Jeanne Zarrilli said.

“But I was surprised by their goalie, who came up with some big saves. I knew more about them offensively than I did defensively.”

Zarrilli said she had anticipated that it would be an evenly matched game.

“I think we were really well-matched,” Zarrilli said. “I knew coming in it was going to be a one-goal game and we’re evenly matched, both sides of the field. Both teams played really hard.”

The Rams (11-4) continued to create chances in the second half against Rangers goalie Lindsey Arsenault (six saves).

“She’s amazing,” Burrell said of Arsenault.

“She’s really good with high balls, coming out, and she’s doing very well for being a junior.”

But the Rangers’ biggest stop came late in the first half, when Kylie Perrin had a chance to shoot into an open net after Arsenault fell in an attempt to make a save and couldn’t recover quick enough to get back into position.

Perrin’s shot hit the right post and bounced back out to her as Arsenault got back into position to make a save.

Arsenault made a pair of saves late in regulation, and after 80 minutes of scoreless play, the teams went to a sudden-death, 15-minute overtime.

“Our approach was to play like we did in the beginning and play tough, and not let up,” Burrell said.

“Just play hard and want to win.”
