Former U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe announced her support for Paula Benoit in the special election for State Senate

District 19, saying she has “a strong independent voice and fights tirelessly for her constituents.”

“Paula is precisely what we need in Augusta,” Snowe said in a statement released Tuesday by the Benoit campaign. “As a successful businesswoman, Paula has a proven record of creating jobs and fighting harmful tax increases. She has earned praise for her willingness to work across party lines to help solve the problems facing our state, and I know she will bring to bear her depth of experience and results-oriented focus as an exceptional senator for the people of Senate District 19.”

Snowe joins U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in endorsing Benoit.

Vitelli has been endorsed by U.S. Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree and unions representing state workers, teachers and Bath Iron Works laborers.

On Tuesday, Vitelli unveiled the endorsement of the Maine AFL-CIO.

“Working people in Senate District 19 would have a strong voice in Augusta with Eloise Vitelli,” AFL-CIO Maine President Don Berry said in a statement.

“She will stand united with us against Paul LePage’s failed leadership and tired attacks on workers’ rights,” Berry said. “Whether it’s helping local residents start their own businesses or working as a former preschool teacher and school committee member, Eloise has always worked to improve our economy, strengthen our communities and invest in our children.”

Vitelli is married to Bob Kalish, a former staff writer for The Times Record.

The special election is Tuesday, Aug. 27.
