Joseph leads Revolution to 1-0 win over Wizards

Shalrie Joseph scored the lone goal of the game to lead the New England Revolution to a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night in Foxborough, Mass.

Joseph put the Revolution ahead in the 31st minute while Bobby Shuttleworth stopped four shots for his first shutout and knock the Wizards out of playoff contention.

Chris Tierney lobbed a long ball down the field, where Joseph caught up with it, headed it around over Jimmy Nielson, and banged it through to give the home side the lead.

n Columbus’ William Hesmer became only the second goalkeeper to score a goal in MLS history when he tied the game in the second minute of second-half stoppage time to help the Crew to a 2-2 tie with Toronto FC in Toronto.

The goal came off a scramble after a Columbus corner kick hit a defender and bounced down. Hesmer settled it with a touch and scored on a right-footed shot from 7 yards.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE: Manchester United, with Wayne Rooney not playing until the last 20 minutes, drew 2-2 with West Bromwich Albion after blowing a two-goal lead. It was the third straight tie for Man United.

U.S. goalkeeper Brad Friedel helped Aston Villa hold first-place Chelsea to a scoreless tie.

PREP SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Janelle Bradish scored two goals and Emily Wyman added one goal and one assist to lead Hebron Academy (5-1-1) to a 4-2 victory over Gould Academy at Bethel.

Courtney Turner scored for Southfield School in a 1-0 win over Berwick Academy at South Berwick. Eliza Hazen made six saves for the Bulldogs (0-7-1).

BOYS’ SOCCER: Sam Blanchet scored four goals and Jock Cooperrider had a goal and three assists to lead Hebron Academy (5-2) to a 7-0 win over Gould Academy at Bethel.

n Jamal Borden scored a goal in each half to help Hyde School of Bath take a 3-2 win over visiting Hyde School of Woodstock, Conn.

FIELD HOCKEY: Moeko Ogawa scored for Hebron Academy (2-4) in a 5-1 loss against Holderness (3-2-4) at Hebron.

Mariah Mosher finished with 11 saves for the Lumberjacks.

FOOTBALL: Matthew Brigham and Drake Kreinz each ran for a touchdown to start a 20-point comeback as Portsmouth Abbey (2-2) rallied for a 27-13 win over Hyde (0-4) at Bath.

QMJHL: Pierre-Olivier Morin scored the go-ahead goal on with just over seven minutes left in the third period as the Lewiston Maineiacs rallied for a 3-1 victory over the Baie-Comeau Drakkar at Baie-Comeau, Quebec.

Nicholas Champion finished with 27 saves for Lewiston, who went 7 for 7 on the penalty kill.

GOLF

PGA: Rocco Mediate holed out with a pitching wedge from 111 yards on the par-5 15th hole for his third eagle of the week and finished with a 4-under 67 to maintain a three-stroke lead in the Frys.com Open in San Martin, Calif.

LPGA: Michele Redman holed out from 126 yards for an eagle on the par-4 18th hole for a 4-under 68 and a share of the third-round lead in the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge in Danville, Calif., with Beatriz Recari and Ilhee Lee.

Roger Federer defeated Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-4 and will play Andy Murray in the Shanghai Masters final in today in China. … Patty Schnyder beat Andrea Petkovic 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in a semifinal of the Generali Ladies tourney in Linz, Austria. … Kimiko Date Krumm remains on track to become the oldest player to win a WTA singles title after beating Shahar Peer in the semifinals of the Japan Open in Osaka. Date Krumm, who turned 40 last month, beat Peer 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5. … Philippe Gilbert held off the challenge of Michele Scarponi to retain his Giro Di Lomdardia cycling title in wet and slippery conditions in Milan. Gilbert finished 12 seconds ahead of Scarponi to win the last major race of the season.
