The Polar Bears (3-1) rebounded after their first loss of the season on Saturday at Amherst. Bowdoin has now won 34 consecutive home games and 11 straight over USM.
Southern Maine (3-4) stymied the Bowdoin attack in the early going as Amanda Kasbohm made several nice early stops to keep the Polar Bears at bay. The Polar Bears finally broke through 11:33 into the contest when Colleen Finnerty put home the game’s first goal.
Moments later, Katie Riley put home her own rebound at 13:24 and Pam Herter gave the hosts a 3-0 advantage at 23:48 as Bowdoin carried the three-goal advantage into halftime.
Bowdoin rolled off six goals to open the second half. Riley and Herter each added their second goals of the night, while Emily Simonton and Liz Znamierowski both found the back of the net. Alexa Baumgartner and Mettler Growney each tallied their first career goals to push the Polar Bear lead to 9-0 late in the game.
Kasbohm made 13 saves in net for the Huskies (48:25, seven goals before giving way to Lindsey Fortin, who stopped two shots (21:35, two goals). Bowdoin’s first two goaltenders Hannah Gartner (48:25) and Clare Belitz (11:41) were not tested. Liz Rill made one save and allowed the one goal over the final 9:54.
Bowdoin will return to action Saturday against third-ranked Middlebury at home at 11 a.m.
