BATH — Sondra Sue Yates, 82, of Bath, passed away peacefully while napping pain-free at home on Friday, July 6, 2018, with her family at her side.

Sondra was diagnosed with lung cancer in June of 2017 and was told that she had 6-8 weeks to live. Sondra was soon anointed by Paster Harry Gomez from the Seventh day Adventist church.

For the next year and a half, she enjoyed life while living with her family in Bath. She was born in Cordell, Oklahoma, on August 22, 1935, the daughter of Frank and Helen Duke. Sondra attended schools in Oklahoma and California.

In 1950, she married Bill Bouts in Oklahoma, and together they had two daughters, Karen and Karla. They later divorced, and Sondra was married to Carl Yates until his death in 1984.

She spent most of her working life in Long Beach, California, and worked for Northrup Aircraft from the time she was 18 until her retirement. While in California she lived near her daughter Karen, son-in-law Bobby, and granddaughter Jamie. In 2001 she moved to Bath, Maine, to be near her daughter Karla, son-in-law Barry, and her grandchildren, Louis and Serena. In 2014, she moved into an apartment in her daughter’s house in Bath. She made many friends in the Bath area.

Sondra traveled extensively throughout the United States including Alaska and Hawaii, to the Caribbean, Mexico, and to Canada. She loved to read, listen to orchestra music, musical plays, held season tickets to the Maine State Music Theatre, was a member of the Bath YMCA, and in her later years listened to audiobooks due to her failing eyesight.

Sondra remained very positive and good-natured after her diagnosis until the time of her death. We were fortunate that she never suffered through any pain.

Sondra is survived by her daughters Karen Shingleton and husband Bobby of Cerritos, Calif., Karla Gordon and husband Barry of Bath, Me. She leaves three grandchildren Jamie Quigley (Lawrence) of Dana Pt., Calif., Louis Petranek of Bath, and Serena Cramond (Mathew) of Perth, Australia. She also leaves four great-grandchildren; Fisher and Ruby of Dana Point, Calif., Sasha of Bath, and Amelia of Perth, Australia.

Sondra’s family would like to thank the staff at Aging Excellence, especially Brenda Thompson and Anya, Leslie, Alexis, Hannah, and many others. Also Chans, Nurse Lynn, and Holly. A special thanks to her close friends Sara Fullerton, Carol Knight and Kellene Golbert-Cohen.

Sondra will be buried with a private service at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery, Brettuns Pond, in Livermore.
