FREEPORT — The Regional School Unit 5 Safety Committee is recommending the district strengthen security systems at the entrances of district schools.
A grant application was submitted to fund front-door buzzers with video and intercom systems for use during the school day, but the grant was not funded.
The RSU 5 Board supports increased security measures and authorized the use of up to $25,000 of capital funds in the current budget to install these systems.
The systems will be installed in RSU 5 schools in the coming weeks. Administration in each school will inform parents of the protocol for this new system as these are installed.
RSU 5 educates students in Freeport, Pownal and Durham. For more information, call 865-0928, ext. 5.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
