TOPSHAM — Robbie Small scored shortly after the game was restarted due to a lightning delay as the Mt. Ararat High School boys soccer team slipped past “Battle of the Bridge” rival Brunswick, 2-1 on Tuesday in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference finale for both squads.

A one-hour, eight-minute rain delay occurred with 21:42 remaining in a 1-1 contest. Small’s game-winning goal came with 15:10 remaining, giving the Eagles a 9-3-2 record.

“It was a typical rivalry game, pretty physical and exciting for the fans,” said Mt. Ararat coach Rick Renaud, who said his fourthseeded Eagles will host No. 5 Edward Little on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. in the Eastern Maine Class A quarterfinals. “After the game was restarted, we came out stronger. We subbed a lot, and I felt our kids were little bit fresher.”

Brunswick, which finished 8-6 and is the likely No. 6 seed in Eastern A, jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Quang Durst goal with 22:43 remaining in the first half.

Mt. Ararat came back four minutes later, getting the tying goal on a Joe Thomas header off a cross from Chris Pepin.
