SEPTEMBER IS National Literacy Month, and the Maine Literacy Volunteers Network is in need of tutors. It will offer training at 14 affiliate offices throughout the state. Teaching experience or an education degree is not required. Volunteers should have a passion to help others start a new life through the joy of reading.

NEW GLOUCESTER students in grades 5 through 12 are invited to participate in the “My Town” Student Photo Contest, sponsored by the New Gloucester Historical Society. Photos must be new and show people or places in New Gloucester. The photos will be displayed in the New Gloucester History Barn, with the top three places judged by town and school officials. POTTERY CLASSES for adults are being offered starting next week at Lincoln Street Center. Projects presented during the course may include lidded forms, kitchen items and tiles, as well as support for individual goals. Classes meet 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays starting Sept. 29 through Nov. 17.
