YARMOUTH – Evan Henry had six goals and two assists, and Steven Petrovek added four goals and one assist as top-seeded Yarmouth won the Eastern Class B boys’ lacrosse championship with a 17-5 victory over No. 2 St. Dominic Wednesday.

The Clippers face Eastern champ Cape Elizabeth for the state title on Saturday.

After winning the opening faceoff, St. Dominic held the ball for over two minutes.

But once Josh Britten came up with a take-away, the Clippers (13-1) quickly took advantage, with Matthew Murphy feeding Henry in front for a goal at 2:28.

Michael Johnson scored unassisted after another turnover less than a minute later, and Henry cut in front of the crease and beat goalie Cody Rodrique to make it 3-0 at 4:34.

“They put three defensemen below the goal to try to stop (Petrovek),” Henry said, “and that freed up the top and gave us more opportunities there.”

Saints Coach Dave Haefele called a timeout after Henry’s second goal to settle his team, and Trevor Haefele put the Saints (13-1) on the board with a low shot past Cam Woodworth off a feed from Dylan Rodrique.

Petrovek answered with a nifty over-the-shoulder shot and after a pair of point-blank saves by Rodrique, he scored on another rush before Yarmouth got two more goals for a 7-1 lead at the end of the first period.

“We tried putting a short stick on Petrovek because he’s the best in the state,” said Haefele, “but they’re just so deep. We don’t have enough legs to keep up.”

The Saints’ defense stiffened in the second quarter, but unassisted goals by Sam Torres and Colby Shields put Yarmouth up 9-1 midway through the period before Tim Day and Anthony Fagone, from Matt Adams, scored 22 seconds apart for the Saints.

Henry’s fourth goal off Murphy’s feed made it 10-3, and any chance of a second-half comeback by the Saints were dampened when Johnson, Henry and Mike McCormick scored in the first two minutes of the third quarter for a 13-3 advantage.

“I understand their face-guarding (Petrovek) to try to take him out of our offense,” said Yarmouth Coach Craig Curry, “but that’s part of our preparation and it leaves other guys open.

“(The Saints) pass the ball beautifully and they have a nice man-up play, so we knew coming in that we had to be patient and keep away from penalties.”
