BIDDEFORD — A sinkhole on Alfred Street has been repaired and covered with concrete, Public Works Director Guy Casavant said.

The hole, approximately 10-by-10 feet and nearly eight feet deep, was created when sewer and catch basin pipes broke in front of the J. Richard Martin Community Center, Casavant said. Crews worked to refill the hole Tuesday and covered it with concrete this morning.

Traffic headed toward the Five Points intersection is flowing freely, but traffic headed toward downtown is being rerouted on Clark Street, to Prospect and Myrtle streets. Casavant expects the eastbound lane to reopen later today.
