OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Parking meters on First Street will be replaced by parking pay station kiosks next summer.

The town has metered parking spaces in the downtown area from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Last year, the town switched parking meters on Old Orchard Street to pay terminals. The terminals accept credit cards and print receipts that parking patrons put on their dashboard to prove payment. Old Orchard Beach Police Chief Dana Kelley said there have been very few complaints about the new pay stations.

This coming summer, the pay stations will be expanded to First Street, as the Town Council Tuesday night approved the purchase of seven parking pay terminals at a total cost of about $53,000. Kelley said there are 95 metered parking spots on First Street, generating about $75,000.

Metered parking on East Grand and its side streets will still have the older-style, coin-operated meters.

Town Council Chairman Shawn O’Neill said there is no intention at this time to add more metered parking in town. Kelley said the meters formerly used on First Street will be kept and used for parts, as they are becoming obsolete.
