AUGUSTA — Buoyed by a record-setting performance by Martha Veroneau, second-seeded Waynflete ran away with a 69-49 victory against seventh-ranked St. Dominic in a Western Class C girls’ basketball quarterfinal Tuesday at the Augusta Civic Center.

On the way to scoring a career-high 37 points, Veroneau, a sophomore guard, sank seven 3-pointers to break the Class C tournament record set 10 years ago by Ashley Woodcock of Jay.

The Flyers, who reached the regional final the past two seasons, will play third-seeded Livermore Falls in a semifinal at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Civic Center.

“Last year my shooting was awful here,” Veroneau said. “It takes some time to get used to. It’s definitely a different atmosphere. But my shot was on today.”

Veroneau had at least one 3-pointer in every quarter, hitting from a variety of spots. She also scored on baseline jumpers from either side of the basket. Twice she stole the ball and scored on breakaways.

“We know we need a lot of contributions from other people, but we have a couple of things we run that give her situations where she can shoot or get somebody (else) open,” Coach Brandon Salway said.

Veroneau, who scored 32 points in a regular-season game, said it took a team effort for the Flyers (16-3) to get past the Saints (12-7).

“Everybody on our team really stepped it up,” she said. “Everybody played an important role.”

Lydia Stegemann scored 14 points and Samantha Oakland had 10. Rhiannan Jackson grabbed 10 rebounds.

“It was a total team effort,” Salway said. “But obviously when you can get your best kid to put up 37 points and beat a record, you should win by a comfortable margin.”

Allaina Murphy led St. Dom’s with 22 points.

“It was really a team effort that stopped Allaina Murphy down low because she’s a very good player,” Veroneau said. “We all had to help out on her.”

The Flyers rode Veroneau’s outside shooting to a 40-29 halftime lead.

She sank her first five 3-pointers while scoring 23 points in the half.

Waynflete opened and closed the first quarter with 6-0 runs to take a 19-9 lead.

Play was more even during a wide-open second quarter. Murphy, who was saddled with two early fouls, scored 13 points to help the Saints close a 16-point gap.

The teams didn’t face each other during the regular season.
