WEST BATH – Isabel Eva Morong, 82, of West Bath, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 14, 2019.
Isabel “Izzy” was born in Bath on March 17, 1937 to Charles and Lillian Johansen, one of seven children. Graduating from Morse High School in 1956, she was proudly part of the Morse High Alumni tradition.
While spending time at Popham Beach she was ‘introduced’ to a member of the Coast Guard by her three-year-old nephew, Shawn McKenna, who would yell ‘hey Coast Guard man’ whenever our dad walked by.
Isabel married the love of her life, Robert Morong, in 1959 and together they raised two sons, Tom and Tim, and daughter, Melissa.
Due to Bob’s career in the Coast Guard, they lived in Southwest Harbor, Rockport and New Castle, N.H. before making their home in West Bath in a house they built on the New Meadows River. It was here that family and friends would gather for cookouts from Memorial Day through Labor Day, spend every holiday and celebrate every Christmas.
Isabel worked at a local bank in her younger years but for the most part was a stay at home mom. She later taught craft classes at the Bailey Evening School and in her home and became well known at the local craft fairs. When her daughter Melissa opened Peter Rabbit Nursery School, Miss Isabel worked beside her and was loved by all the children.
Some of Isabel’s greatest joys were going dancing with Bob, boat rides on the New Meadows and most of all spending time with her grandchildren. Her grandchildren were so lucky to have Grammy caring for them each day, and to have her as that extra special person in their lives.
The love of Isabel’s life, her husband, Bob, passed away unexpectedly in 1996, and she missed him every day.
Isabel was also predeceased by her parents; and siblings, Charlie, Lillian Jewell (Warren), Dorothy McKenna (Joseph ‘Busta’), Arthur ‘Cool Artie J’, Gloria Quinn (John); nephew, Shawn McKenna, nieces, Claudia McIntire and Debra Johansen; brothers-in-law, Wayne Morong and Raleigh Davis as well as her in-laws, Clifton and Shirley Morong.
Isabel is survived by her children, Tom and his wife, Deanne, Tim and his wife, Anne, Melissa and her husband, Sam Haggett; as well as her brother, Bobby and his wife, Wendy; grandchildren, Andrew and his wife, Ambyr, Katie Morong, Kayla Morong, Joe Clancy, Victoria and Tyler Haggett. The most recent addition to her family, who gave her so much joy, was her first great-grandchild, Camden Robert Morong.
Isabel is also survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara Johansen, brother-in-law Gerald Morong and his wife, Francis, sisters-in-law, Joanne Davis and Camilla Morong; along with many nieces and nephews who were all very special to Izzy.
A celebration of Isabel’s life will be on Saturday, April 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Kennebec Tavern in Bath.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Morse High School Scholarship Fund noting in the memo FBO Sally Goulette Hersom Scholarship.
