
BRUNSWICK — The eighth-ranked Middlebury College men’s tennis team tipped fourth-ranked Bowdoin, 5-4, in a match at Maine Pines on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears fell to 12-3 with the loss in a rematch of last season’s Division III national championship, also won by the Panthers.
Three incredibly tight doubles matches saw Middlebury pull out two tiebreak wins at No. 1 and 2 to take a key 2-1 advantage into singles play. Bowdoin won at No. 3 doubles, 8-6, courtesy of Justin Patel and Oscar Yang.
The Polar Bears got a straight-set win from Patel at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-3, and claimed a pair of three-set victories at No. 1 from Grant Urken (4-6, 7-6, 6-2) and No. 3 from Yang (6-7, 7-5, 6-2).
Middlebury won a trio of three-set singles matches to clinch the victory.
Bowdoin heads to Lewiston on Tuesday afternoon to play Bates at 4 p.m.
Women’s lacrosse
Bowdoin celebrated Senior Day with an authoritative 21-9 win over Williams on Saturday afternoon at Ryan Field.
The 14th-ranked Polar Bears improved to 9-5 (5-4 NESCAC), while the Ephs fell to 7-7 (3-6 NESCAC).
On the heels of three early goals by Katie Miller, Bowdoin sprinted to an early 5-1 lead and never looked back.
The Ephs closed to within three goals, 6-3, on scores from Meghan Halloran and Suzanna Penikis, but the Polar Bears answered with a 5-1 surge, starting and ending on Miller goals, to push their edge to 11-4.
Bowdoin pushed the contest into running time with a 6-0 run that canvassed the final 1:42 of the first half and the first 7:47 of the second, extending the advantage to double digits on a pair of Fiona Bundy goals.
Williams never got closer than 10 goals over the remainder as Bowdoin cruised to the win.
Miller led all players with five goals and passed the 100-goal plateau for her career, becoming the fastest player in school history to reach the mark (33 games). Bundy scored four goals and added seven ground balls for the Polar Bears while Kara Finnerty scored two, added three assists, had seven draws and collected four ground balls. Eliza Denious and Amanda Anderson also had hat tricks for Bowdoin.
Erin Morrissey made eight saves for the Polar Bears. Kami Cisneros also made eight stops for the Ephs.
Bowdoin, which still has a shot at a home NESCAC Quarterfinal, will head to Tufts for a 7 p.m. match on Wednesday night.
Women’s tennis
Bowdoin handed MIT just its third loss of the season (11-3) in an 8-1 final on Friday afternoon in Brunswick.
Bowdoin swept doubles for the 3-0 lead. Fleming Landau/Sarah Shadowens cruised at No. 3 (8-1) and Tasha Christ/Izzy Essi picked up another point at No. 2 (8-2). Julia Marks and Devon Wolfe held off a late surge to clinch the final point at No. 1, winning 8-7.
Sasa Jovanovic stepped in for singles play and picked up a win at No. 5 (6-0, 6-2). Landau cruised at No. 6, winning 6-0, 6-1. Marks (6-1, 6-3) and Wolfe (6-3, 6-2) won at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. Christ picked up the team’s final point at No. 2, winning 7-6, 6-4.
On Saturday, third-ranked Middlebury was too much for sixth-ranked Bowdoin, 8-1, in a match played at Maine Pines on Saturday morning.
The Polar Bears fell to 11-4 this season with the loss.
Bowdoin’s lone point came at No. 6 singles as Landau won, 6-3 6-3.
Bowdoin hosts Bates on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Women’s rugby
Bowdoin hosted the Polar Bear 7s Tournament on a rainy Saturday at Pickard Field.
With action competing in three different tiers, the Polar Bears had teams in both the Tier 2 and Tier 3 divisions on the day.
In Tier 2 action, Bowdoin defeated UNE, 10-5, Colby, 17-0, Middlebury, 15-7, and lost to Colby Sawyer, 27-12.
Co-Captain Liz D’Angelo led the attack, anchored the defensive wall, scored one try and converted two kicks. Top defenders on the day were Sophia Karris, Sara Nelson and Satya Kent.
Bowdoin went 3-2 in Tier 3 play, defeating Colby and Northeastern before falling to UNE.
In the knockout round, Bowdoin defeated UNE. 17-5. before falling to Northeastern, 25-15, in the final.
The Polar Bears switch from 7-a-side back to 15s rugby and close out their spring season with a game at Colby College on May 4.
Men’s track
Bates won the Maine State Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday at Bowdoin,

narrowly edging the Polar Bears, 233-229.
Bowdoin’s Yaw Sekyere was named the Alan Hillman Track Athlete of the Meet, while John Rex of Bates was recognized as the Fred Tootell Field Athlete at the Championship.
Sekyere won both the 100-meter (11.10) and 200 (22.55) races for the Polar Bears on Saturday and anchored Bowdoin’s winning 4 x 100 relay team of Mason Freeman, Owen Tuck and Troy Green to finish in 42.55.
Naphtali Moulton won the 10,000 race in a time of 32:36.08 for the Polar Bears.
Bowdoin had multiple winners in the field events, including Joseph Staudt in the high jump (6-04.75), Ryan Durkin in the pole vault (14-09.5) and Mason Freeman in the long jump (21-09).
Bowdoin will head to Middlebury for the NESCAC Championship on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Men’s lacrosse
Williams rode an 8-0 run in the second and third quarters to pull away from Bowdoin in a 17-9 win on Saturday afternoon.
The eighth-ranked Ephs improved to 12-2 (7-2 NESCAC) with the win, while Bowdoin dropped to 6-8 (2-7 NESCAC) and is officially eliminated from NESCAC Tournament contention.
Trailing 2-1 entering the second quarter, a pair of goals from Nick Iznaga sparked a 4-1 Bowdoin run that gave the visitors a 5-3 lead following a Jeff Powers goal with 7:40 left before halftime.
The Ephs rolled off four straight goals to end the period, regaining the lead on a Cory Lund goal and taking a 7-5 edge into intermission.
Williams continued its run in the third quarter, scoring four unanswered goals to push the lead to 11-5 In all, Williams held Bowdoin scoreless for a span of 24:50 from the end of the second quarter to early in the fourth.
Iznaga got Bowdoin back on the board with 13:10 to go, but Williams replied with five straight to put the contest out of reach.
Jake Haase and Cory Lund had three goals and two assists apiece to lead Williams to the win.
Bowdoin was paced by a hat trick from both Iznaga, who added an assist, and Powers.
Defensively, Henry Savage had four caused turnovers and five ground balls for Bowdoin.
Michael Covell made seven saves for the Polar Bears, while Harry Gahagan made ten stops in the win for the Ephs.
Bowdoin held a 57-36 advantage in shots for the contest, but only 20 of their shots were on goal.
Bowdoin will close out its season on Wednesday evening when the Polar Bears host Tufts at 7 p.m. at Whittier Field.
