GRAY – Alicia Valente had 11 points and 11 rebounds Wednesday night to lead eighth-seeded Gray-New Gloucester to a 35-27 victory against ninth-ranked Wells in a Western Class B schoolgirl basketball prelim.

Gray-New Gloucester (12-7) will play top-seeded York (18-0) at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals at the Portland Expo.

Rachel Edson, who finished with eight points, closed the first half with a 3-pointer to give the Patriots a 16-10 lead.

Wells (9-10) scored the first five points of the third quarter but managed just two more in the period. Maggie Chaplin, who scored nine points, made a 3-pointer near the end of the quarter to keep the lead at six, 23-17, and Wells got no closer the rest of the way.

Sammie Wilkins had four points and Meghan Dehetre added three for the Patriots.

Kelsey Bragdon had 14 points, and Mariyah Heath and Meaghan Lewia each closed with six for Wells.

Gray-New Gloucester lost to York 60-37 on Dec. 14, the second game of the season, but is 7-3 in its last 10, including Wednesday’s victory.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

NOKOMIS 56, MT. DESERT ISLAND 51: Tenth-seeded Nokomis (12-7) opened a 19-point halftime lead, then held off seventh-ranked Mt. Desert Island (14-5) in an Eastern Class B prelim at Bar Harbor.

Nokomis will face second-seeded Ellsworth (18-0) in the quarterfinals at the Bangor Auditorium at 9:05 a.m. Saturday.

Nokomis reached the quarterfinals for the first time since 2003.

The Warriors led 38-19 at the half, but the Trojans cut the deficit to 45-34 after three quarters.

Chris Braley led Nokomis with a game-high 31 points. Ruel Libby and Spencer Hartsgrove each had nine.

Ben Walls led MDI with 14 points. Caleb McDonald added 13.

BOYS’ HOCKEY

WATERVILLE 6, MESSALONSKEE 0: Matt Lee and Kyle Bishop each scored twice to lead the Purple Panthers (8-8-1) past Messalonskee (6-9-2) at Waterville.

The Panthers outshot the Eagles, 44-9.

GREELY 6, CAMDEN HILLS 2: Erik Rost had two goals and two assists as the Rangers (13-2-1) defeated the Windjammers (6-10) at Rockport.

Rost set up the first two goals, by Justin Murphy in the first period and Devyn Rogers in the second. Rost then scored the next two for a 4-0 lead before John Downey made it 5-0 later in the second. Drew Hackett added an unassisted goal with 3:39 left in the third.

Ben Dufour and Jack Horne scored in the third period for Camden Hills.

Matt Labbe made 18 saves for Greely. Aaron Danielo stopped 38 shots for the Windjammers.
