SANFORD — The Sanford Parks and Recreation department sponsored a variety of contests for the youth of Sanford and Springvale during the Winterfest vacation week in February. Activities included indoor and outdoor events.
The annual ice fishing derby was a frigid event with good ice. The first place boys winner was Lucas Barrow with a 91/2-inch pickerel. The first-place girls winner was Haley Whitten with a 15-inch pickerel.
The snow sculpture contest was very popular. First place went to Team James, which created a life-sized gorilla. Second place went to Team Janowsek. Third place went to Team Hill for its creation “Under the Sea.”
The pole/pedal/paddle winners included Nick and Carly Fahrenbruch, Peyton Pierce and Dillon Lambert, Adrien Letourneau and Dylan Dymond, Zach Fahrenbruch and Michael Cote.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
