York County Republicans chose Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas as their candidate for President Saturday – and as it turned out, Cruz took the lions share of votes statewide.
In York County, Cruz earned 893 votes, with businessman Donald Trump coming in a close second with 843 votes. Ohio Gov. John Kasich came in third in the York County contest, with 300 votes and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio trailed the pack with 166. In all, 2,202 York County Republicans cast caucus ballots in heavy voting Saturday at Biddeford Middle School. The totals are unofficial and do not include absentee ballots cast by veterans.
Statewide, Cruz beat Trump, hauling in nearly 46 percent of the vote.
The Maine GOP Saturday night reported Cruz had 8,550 votes to Trump’s 6,070, according to the Associated Press. Because Cruz did not win a majority, the delegates are being split with 12 for Cruz, nine for Trump and two for Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Florida U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio gets none.
Party chairman Rick Bennett said turnout was “extraordinary” at the 22 caucus locations.
The GOP says 18,650 votes were cast. That’s more than triple the number of votes in 2012.
