TOPSHAM – Alfred Francis Obery, 86, of Governor’s Way died peacefully at The Highlands in Topsham on Tuesday, July 9, 2019.
He was born in Augusta on April 23, 1933 to parents, Thomas and Marguerite (McBean) Obery. A graduate of Cony High School in 1950 and Colby College in 1954, Al went on to receive a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 1958.
He served in the United States Army Dental Corps in Fort Monmouth, N.J. from 1958 to 1960, and then returned home to open his dental practice in Topsham. That same year, he joined the Brunswick Golf Club, where he remained a member for 57 years.
Dedicated to his community, Al belonged to St. Charles Parish, serving on the church council and on the building committee for the new St. Charles Church and St. Katherine Drexel Chapel in Harpswell. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Brunswick and Topsham Water District and was a member of the Civil War Roundtable. He loved volunteering as a track official for local high schools and colleges. After retiring in 1993, Al and his wife, Mary, traveled the United States and Europe, where they especially enjoyed taking river cruises with old college friends.
Al was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Marguerite; and brother, Thomas Jr.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary A. (Pilon) Obery of Topsham; brothers, Richard and David of Augusta; children, Curtis and wife, Lisa of Cumberland, Christopher and wife, Gina of Norfolk, Va., Kevin and wife, Jan of Topsham, Eric and wife, Sharon of Portland; and niece, Danielle. Al also leaves behind his grandchildren, Kristen, Jack, Madison, Patrick, Anne, Ryan, and Carolyne, as well as his great-grandson, Cameron.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 16, at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church-All Saints Parish located at 132 McKeen Street, Brunswick. Following the mass, there will be a reception from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Brunswick Golf Club, located at 165 River Road.
