The Peaks Island Independence Committee plans to give islanders an update Sunday on efforts to secede from Portland.

The group plans a meeting from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Community Center to discuss the secession movement.

A lawmaker from York submitted legislation this month that would allow the island in Casco Bay to start the process of splitting from Portland and forming its own town.

Rand Gee, a member of the Independence Committee, said a nominating committee will be elected at Sunday’s meeting to put up slates of candidates for the steering committee that is overseeing the secession effort. The update will include a timeline for the secession effort.

State law calls for a secession petition to be submitted to the city, at least one public hearing, an advisory vote by the city and a six-month effort to resolve outstanding issues between the city and Peaks Island. At that point, legislation can be submitted calling for a vote on the matter.

Many islanders complain that they pay about $6 million in property taxes to Portland but the value of the services they receive in return is only about half that amount.

Peaks Island’s effort to secede from Portland four years ago was narrowly defeated in the Legislature.
