From the Journal Tribune: “A crew of four rescue workers in wetsuits pulled a local man to safety Thursday after he went through the ice on Square Pond in an attempt to save his dog. Both man and dog were fine, said Shapleigh Fire Chief Duanne Romano. Stephen Fiske, 55, had taken his canoe into Square Pond after his dog went through the thin ice off Indian Village Road near the Fiske home. Rescue workers were called about 4 p.m. on Thursday. Rescue workers, two from Acton and two from Shapleigh, had to break through ice in the pond to get to the man.”

50 years ago

From the Biddeford-Saco Journal: “A single car crash on the Pool Road, Biddeford, last night was caused by a dog that crossed the road in the front of the car, police said. Roger Marcotte, 18, of 396 West St., Biddeford, said he swerved his vehicle to avoid striking the animal and lost control with the auto rolling over. No injuries were reported from the crash and no estimates of damage were available.”

From the Biddeford Daily Journal: “The interest in the gymnastics carnival which is to take place at National hall, Thursday evening, March 30, with students of Biddeford public schools furnishing the program, is growing every day and the indications are that there will be a large gathering at the exhibition. This morning, physical instructor Edwin F. Pidgeon put the boys and girls through the exercises which are to be given and everything went off smoothly and nicely.”
