BUXTON — A three-hour standoff with a distraught man ended peacefully Friday morning, according to police.
Police responded to a call around 8:45 p.m. Thursday to a disturbance at 45 Green Ridge Road, where it was reported that a 29-year-old man was “intoxicated and out of control,” according to a statement from Buxton Police Chief Michael Grovo.
The first police unit to arrive on the scene found Jonathan Mckeever in the house with a loaded handgun, making suicidal and homicidal threats, said Grovo. The police officer retreated with Mckeever’s parents to safety and called for additional help, said Grovo.
Officers from Gorham Police, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, the York County Sheriff’s Department and Maine State Police arrived, a boundary around the house was set up, and the next-door neighbors were evacuated from their home.
A crisis negotiator with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department communicated with Mckeever, who surrendered peacefully early Friday morning. He was transported to Southern Maine Medical Center.
Mckeever lives with his parents at Green Ridge Road, and will be charged with creating a police standoff, said Grovo.
