Update 1:42 p.m.
As snow continues to fall, the Portland International Jetport is seeing only a few cancellations and delays in flights arriving and departing, jetport marketing manager Greg Hughes said.
“The field is open and operating. It’s not going to be like the last storm. We don’t have the heavy winds, so that helps,” Hughes said.
Maine State Police have responded to calls for minor slide offs, but no major accidents, authorities said. The speed limit on the Maine Turnpike and Interstate 295 has been reduced for safer travel.
A crash on Interstate 295 at mile 26 in Brunswick had backed up northbound traffic. Authorities said nobody was hurt in the crash, which was reported at about 2 p.m.
Schools and organizations continue to cancel evening activities due to the storm and municipalities have canceled some meetings scheduled for tonight. People are urged to check cancellations before heading out.
PORTLAND — Up to 8 inches of snow and some freezing rain is headed into the state today, the National Weather Service said.
The service has posted a winter storm warning from 11 a.m. this morning until 5 a.m. Wednesday. The snow that started this morning is expected to become heavy at times this afternoon and possibly mix with freezing rain, with highs in the upper 20s. About 3 to 5 inches of snow is expected by nightfall.
Parents and people planning to attend evening events should check for early dismissals and cancellations. The Portland School Department has already canceled afterschool and evening activities, while Gorham and Scarborough schools have announced early dismissals. Parking bans have also been announced from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday in Biddeford and from noon today until 3 p.m. Wednesday in Old Orchard Beach.
The speed limit on the turnpike from Kittery to Exit 109 in Augusta has been reduced to 45 mph due to the snow and slick driving conditions. Some minor accidents have been reported by authorities, so the Maine State Police are asking motorists to take caution.
Snow and freezing rain is forecast for tonight and then snow and rain after midnight, with total accumulations of 4 to 8 inches. As much as a quarter-inch of ice is also possible, the NWS said.
Snow and rain is expected after midnight.
Wednesday is forecast to be cloudy with rain and snow showers and highs in the upper 30s.
