BIDDEFORD — The 27-year-old victim of what Biddeford police are calling a racially motivated, violent assault was released today from Maine Medical Center.

The victim’s fiance – the pair do no want to be identified – said he was doing fairly well considering the nature of the attack by five men, who used baseball bats and clubs to beat him. He suffered head injuries, but no broken bones.

Biddeford police said the victim, his 29-year-old fiance and her 4-year-old daughter were asleep in a room at the Sleepy Hollow Motel around 2 a.m. Saturday when five men used bats to break out the window of their room.

The child, who was sleeping next to the window, was covered with shattered glass. Her mother said she locked her daughter in the bathroom to protect her. They were not injured.

When the victim, who is black, went to the door of the room, the five men jumped him and began pummeling him. Throughout the assault, police said the men yelled ethnic slurs and racial taunts.

Three local men have been arrested. Dale M. Pinkham Jr., 20, of Old Orchard Beach, was charged with disorderly conduct, carrying a concealed weapon, and aggravated assault; Darren Crawford, 20, of Biddeford, was charged with elevated aggravated assault; and Michael Gagne, 18, of Old Orchard Beach, was charged with aggravated assault.

The alleged attackers are scheduled to make their first court appearance on Tuesday by video conference call, according to the York County Jail.
